PADI Underwater Navigator Course


Have you tried getting lost on your way back to your boat?  Do you want to discover more of what lies underwater, but you do not possess enough underwater navigation and observation skills?  The PADI Underwater Navigator Course helps develop and enhance your direction-finding skills underwater.  It will train you to use your underwater navigation device accurately and use natural cues so you can easily find your way underwater.

PADI Navigation Course

The PADI Underwater Navigation course is a 1 to 1.5-day development program that trains you to navigate correctly and safely underwater.  The course involves a development theory with the use of a manual and a video, as well as dives with your PADI instructor.

During the course, you will learn the following:

  • Planning and organizing underwater diving navigation
  • Problems and hazards of underwater navigation
  • Techniques in estimating distances underwater
  • Underwater navigation patterns
  • Natural navigation
  • Underwater compass navigation
  • Marking or relocating submerged object or position from the surface
  • Dive site relocation techniques
  • Estimating distances
  • Following irregular paths with an underwater navigation system (Nav-Finder)

Because of your enhanced diving navigation skills, you will have more confidence when diving.  You can follow interesting sea creatures and explore more sights without feeling anxious that you will get lost on your way back.  You will also gain more independence in diving since you already know how to navigate underwater.  You do not have to depend on co-divers to lead you the way.  The PADI Underwater Navigator course will make diving more relaxed, more fun, and definitely more exciting as you gain more confidence and independence underwater.

Taking the PADI underwater navigator course may also get you a college credit.  The first dive during this course may credit as an Adventure Dive for your Advanced Open Water Diver certification, as well as your Master Scuba Diver Certification and your PADI Divemaster Course.

PADI Navigation Course Prerequisites

To enroll in the PADI Underwater Navigation Course, you have to be at least 10 years old with PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver certification.

PADI Underwater Navigator Course Equipment

For this course, you will need your basic scuba gear, as well as a compass and a slate.  Other stuff you may need include lines, reels, and marker bouys.  Your instructor will inform you of the other gear you need to have during your dives.
