Diving with Thresher Sharks in Malapascua
Pelagic thresher sharks are the most famous marine visitors around Malapascua.
These graceful sharks normally spend much of their time in deep water. However, they rise toward offshore cleaning stations where small reef fish remove parasites from their bodies.
Many current thresher shark encounters take place at Kimud Shoal.
The trip usually begins early in the morning. After a boat journey across open water, divers descend with their guide and wait near the approved viewing areas.
Thresher sharks are shy and cautious. Therefore, divers should remain calm and allow the sharks to approach naturally.
Do not chase them, block their path, or swim directly toward them.
Diving Rules at Kimud Shoal
Kimud Shoal is managed as a Marine Protected Area and Ecotourism Zone. Current rules apply to diver experience, buoyancy, equipment, and shark encounters.
For example:
- Open Water Divers with fewer than 50 logged dives must dive with a dive professional.
- Open Water and Advanced Open Water Divers with fewer than 50 dives must complete a buoyancy workshop.
- Discover Scuba Diving and Open Water training dives are not permitted.
- Snorkeling and freediving are not allowed.
- Reef hooks and metal pointers are prohibited.
- Gloves are not allowed unless medically approved.
- Divers must maintain the required distance from the sharks.

Monad Shoal
Monad Shoal is the historical dive site that helped make Malapascua famous.
For many years, divers travelled there before sunrise to watch thresher sharks visit cleaning stations around the underwater plateau.
Today, many regular encounters take place at Kimud Shoal. However, Monad remains an important Malapascua dive site.
Sea Explorers may visit Monad Shoal, Kimud Shoal, or both. The schedule depends on recent sightings, weather, sea conditions, local rules, and the planned dive program.

How to Get to Malapascua
Most international and domestic guests arrive through Mactan-Cebu International Airport.
The usual journey includes:
- A road transfer from Cebu or Mactan to Maya Port
- A boat crossing from Maya to Malapascua
- A short walk or island transfer to the resort
The drive normally takes around three to four hours. However, traffic, road conditions, and stops can affect the journey.
The boat crossing usually takes around 30 to 40 minutes. Travel time depends on the vessel and sea conditions.
